Tina Mentol, All of this and nothing
Hello,
my name is Tina and I'm an ethnologist living in Slovenia researching Slovenian food&dishes.
And probably eating remarkable dishes and drinking great wines... a lot.
I am an MA of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology, my master's theme was "Slovenian national dishes" and I finished my studies in September of 2019. I've researched identity and understanding of Slovenian national dishes among Slovenians, a lot of people who are living in Slovenia doesn't have a strong idea what a Slovenian national dish is or what could it be because they're thinking regionally or just saying something they've seen in the news.
Among the younger population, there isn't a strong opinion or proud of being Slovenian and respect of Slovenian food - described as not cool enough
in the sense of the popularity of the dishes. With my work and with all of my heart I'm trying to change that and working on MAKING SLOVENIAN FOOD GREAT AGAIN.
I helped with creating of Slovenian House- Slovenska Hiša and Slovenian House - Figovec, Slovenska Hiša - Figovec - formerly known as Figovec.
I worked on an idea of Slovenian restaurant with all Slovenian ingredients, I went to the farmer markets and fairs and connected them with the restaurant.
Both of the restaurants are serving only Slovenian dishes with a deep respect to the Slovenian tradition and grandmas style of kitchen.
Farm to table concept and local, Slovenian. I'm hosting events called Vino se radio druži, in the translation Wine likes to hang around or Hanging around with wine, it sounds great in Slovene I promise,
where we join local wines with local food and explore Slovenian indigenous grape varieties with the winemakers and food-pairing. I'm also a WSET lvl 2 sommelier and I have a great interest in wine. (I need to taste and test... pretty good job)
I was working on projects The Slovenia Restaurant Awards, working as social media manager at The Slovenia and Slovenia In Your Pocket.
I have 7 years of working experience and knowledge in working with Social Media platforms and I use it to embrace Slovenian heritage.
I am/was working as a model and I have also experience in the fashion industry. With my research about Slovenian national dishes. I came up with an idea, that I could make the elements of Slovenian cuisine popular or been seen trough fashion. I've come up with the idea of Slocks - Slovenian socks, it is based on the research of anthropologist Daniel Miller - Material culture (where he is exploring things and symbols in our and others cultures), huge influences were - Slovenian Anthropologist Dr Jernej Mlekuž (he wrote a book about Kranjska klobasa and Kranjsko klobasanje, Predmeti, ki so Slovencem sveti (Things, saint to Slovenes).
I've put motifs of POTICA and KRANJSKA KLOBASA on socks, socks are MADE IN SLOVENIA and have an ecological certificate, they are a part of sustainable fashion.
I've started my brand in December 2019 with my own "student budget" and it had a positive response. My socks - Slocks found the way to the AMERICA and Canada trough social media and I'm very proud of that!
Slocks have a Slovenian and English description on the etiquette on the backside and they're educating people about their motifs and symbols. Since then I've made MEDENE as honey socks, wine - socks are coming with our indigenous wines and grapes, CVIČEK is already available!
